Taking Self Too Seriously

A newly consecrated bishop complained to motherly Pope John XXIII during his first private audience that his new responsibility kept him from sleeping at night.

“Oh, it was the same with me during the first weeks of my pontificate,” said the Pope confidentially. “But then one night I saw my guardian angel in my waiting room and he confided to me, ‘Giovanni, don’t take yourself so seriously’ ….. And ever since then I sleep well at night.”

Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Or else, you may achieve the success, but the spark, the feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die.

One thing about nurturing the spark – don’t take yourself TOO seriously. We are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. ….. The world will go on. Do we really need to get so worked up? We are people, not some programmed device.
