People Before Profession

A school had an opening for a Sanskrit teacher. Several candidates were interviewed but two were short-listed. One of the selected teachers had a graduate degree and several years of teaching experience in an institution; the other had only recently graduated from college. In a final interview the principal asked both teachers a decisive question: “Why do you want to teach here?”

The experienced teacher said, “Because I love to teach Sanskrit.”

The younger candidate’s response to the same question was, “Because I love to teach children.” She got the job.

………………….

Many are in the habit of loving things and using people. For the experienced teacher her passion teaching Sanskrit; the children for her was just an unavoidable element in the realization of her objective; whereas the younger teacher liked teaching children.
